Bespoke cake decorating service. That’s how Adam Skriver and Marieke Nijenhuis describe their popular Coastal Cake Company that specializes in custom wedding and special occasion cakes and confections since 2011. After only a few years in business, the two now service about 150 weddings a year and have recently baked their 15,000th cupcake. How do the two sustain their creative energy? “Marieke is passionate about pastry art, and I’m passionate about Marieke,” says Adam.
You just can’t overstate the clean, beautiful, environment here with forests and hiking trails only minutes away,” says Adam. “All those things fuel our creativity.”
The two young entrepreneurs have benefited from financing from Futurpreneur (formerly CYBF - Canada Youth Business Foundation) which was an important leg up in the development of their business. They also enjoy the business connections they’ve made through the Chamber of Commerce, and their participation in the Craig Street Market. The other important factor for the young couple was affordability and business acceptance. “Alberta is about big business and home-based businesses are not as accepted as they are here,” says Adam.
When they’re not at work, the two find they have easy access to all the shopping, and entertainment options in the Parksville-Qualicum Beach region without the traffic.
